What is Yuppa?

"I started Yuppa to give myself and many others a creative outlet. A place to empower other young people, a place to find out more about yourself and other things, and a place to begin. Yuppa is a blank sheet of paper. I will always ensure that Yuppa is an outlet for young voices to self-express. That's my role here." - Eboni Burke, founder of Yuppa.

Musical Spotlight: Waitress

Writer's picture: YuppaYuppa

Welcome to your first monthly dose of musical magic! This will be a chilled musical related feed talking about plots, actors, music and more. So, without further ado, let's get into it!!!

'Waitress'- Jessie Nelson

Short Overview

Waitress is a heart-wrenching roller coaster of a show. It is based on and named after the 2007 film of the same name written by Adrienne Shelly. The plot follows “Jenna”, a waitress and pie-maker at Joe’s Diner. Her husband treats her very poorly and she secretly wants to part with him. One day she feels sick and fears the worst (a baby). The test comes back positive in the song 'The Negative' ironically. She soon meets her OB/GYN and falls in love with the new doctor... And a whole series of events ensue. You didn't think I was going to spoil it did you?

The Music

Waitress features and all original score, all music and lyrics were written / composed by american singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles. The cool part is that the show uses a six-member orchestra which plays all of the songs in the musical. It features a keyboard, cello, piano, guitar, bass and drums. Sara also produced and recorded the “turn off your cell phones” announcement in the form of a song.

My Favouites of Waitress in threes...

3 Characters

-Jenna Hunterson (Main Character) – As kind as she is talented at baking

-Dr. Jim Pomatter (OB/GYN) – Jenna’s love intrest and loving partner

-Dawn Williams (Waitress at Diner) – Really funny, dysfunctional, introverted waitress

3 Songs

-Opening Up

-A Soft Place to Land

-You Matter to Me

I fully recommend anyone to see this musical if you're ever in New York / London. Or if you’re wallet bound, You can always find a recording online.
